SUMMARY:Monthly Health & Wellness Tips - November 2019
DESCRIPTION:November is American Diabetes Month and Healthy Bladder Month \nGeneral Symptoms of Diabetes:  Increased hunger; Increased thirst; Weight Loss; Frequent Urination; Blurry Vision; Extreme fatigue\, and Sores that don’t heal. \nTypes of Diabetes:  Type 1 – The immune system mistakenly attacks and destroys insulin-producing beta cells in the pancreas.  Genes may play a role in some people.  It is also possible that a virus sets off the immune system attack.  Type 2 – Stems from a combination of genetics and lifestyle factors.  Carrying extra weight\, especially in your belly\, makes your cells more resistant to the effects of insulin on your blood sugar.  This condition runs in families.  Family members share genes that make them more likely to get type 2 diabetes and to be overweight.  Gestational diabetes – is the result of hormonal changes during pregnancy.  The placenta produces hormones that make a pregnant woman’s cells less sensitive to the effects of insulin.  Women who are overweight when they get pregnant or who gain too much weight during the pregnancy are more likely to get gestational diabetes. \nHealthy Bladder \nDid you know? Bladder Facts\n\nThe bladder is a hollow\, balloon shaped organ\, and is mostly made of muscle.\nOn average\, the bladder holds about two cups of urine (about 16 ounces).\nWhen the bladder is empty it looks like a deflated balloon. The shape of a bladder changes when it fills up.\nUrine is produced in the kidneys. It flows through tubes called ureters into the bladder.\nIt’s normal to go to the bathroom 4 to 8 times a day and no more than twice a night.\nWomen have shorter urethras than men and are more likely to get a bladder infection as bacteria from outside the body can get into the urinary system easier.\nThe bladder muscle helps you urinate by squeezing to force the urine out.

SUMMARY:Monthly Health & Wellness Tips - November 2019 (Week 3)
DESCRIPTION:November is American Diabetes Month and Healthy Bladder Month \nDiabetes:  Prep for quick meals; Make the right choices:  they include fruits and vegetables; lean meats and plant-based sources of protein; less added sugar; less processed food.  Go heart-healthy:  Choose the right fats in moderation – butter is high in saturated fat\, so try to cut on the amount you use.  Include omega-3s – fatty fish like salmon\, albacore tuna\, herring\, rainbow trout\, mackerel\, sardines\, soybean products\, walnuts\, flaxseed and canola oil.  Choose to healthy cooking method:  broiling\, baking\, roasting\, steaming or grilling; Homemade and fresh is best.  To add more flavor with less fat\, sugar and salt\, squeeze fresh lemon juice or lime juice on steamed vegetables\, broiled fish\, rice\, salads or pasta. Trim the fat; roast foods on a rack to let fat drip off.  Substitute healthier ingredients in your favorite recipes – try fresh fruit with plain yogurt\, fresh vegetables and hummus\, a slice of whole wheat toast\, and natural peanut butter or nuts as a snack. \nTips for Keeping Your Bladder Healthy \n\nDrink plenty of water. Strive to drink 6 to 8 cups of water each day.\nCut down on the amount of caffeine and alcohol you drink – these may upset your bladder. Limit your intake of coffee\, tea or cola as these can heighten bladder activity and lead to leakage.\nWomen should sit to go to the toilet – they should not hover over the toilet seat.\nTake your time when on the toilet so that your bladder can empty – if you rush\, and do not empty your bladder fully\, over time\, you could get a bladder infection.\nStay away from foods that bother the bladder. Some foods can worsen incontinence. Skip foods like chocolate (also a source of caffeine)\, as well as spicy or acidic foods like tomatoes and citrus fruits.\nKeep your pelvic floor muscles strong with pelvic floor muscle training.\nStop smoking. It is of great value to stop smoking for your bladder health – using tobacco is a major cause of bladder cancer.

SUMMARY:Monthly Health & Wellness Tips - November 2019 (Week 4)
DESCRIPTION:November is American Diabetes Month and Healthy Bladder Month \nDiabetes Prevention:  Get at least 150 minutes of aerobic exercise\, such as walking or cycling; Cut saturated and trans fats\, along with refined carbohydrates\, out of your diet;  Eat more fruits\, vegetables and whole grains; Eat smaller portions; Try to lose 7 percent of your body weight if you’re overweight or obese; Stop smoking and drinking alcoholic beverages; Pay attention to your blood pressure. \nBladder Health \nWHAT IS A URINARY TRACT INFECTION? A urinary tract infection (UTI) is a bacterial infection in any part of the urinary system — the kidneys\, ureters\, bladder or urethra. A bladder infection is the most common type of infection. People of any age or gender can get UTIs\, but they are much more common in women. Studies show that 60% of all women will get a UTI in their lifetime. Additionally\, between 20% and 40% of women will have a repeat infection. \nHOW CAN YOU PREVENT A UTI? Bacteria lives all over our bodies and routinely get into our bladder. We often flush bacteria out by passing urine\, which stops them from causing a UTI. There are ways to prevent your chances of getting a UTI. To prevent a UTI\, you should: • Drink plenty of fluids (2L/day)\, including water\, to keep well hydrated and to help flush out bacteria. • Go to the bathroom when you need to and don’t rush to finish. • Keep your genital area clean: Uncircumcised men should retract and clean under the foreskin of the penis. • Certain forms of birth control\, such as spermicidal foam and diaphragms\, are known to increase the risk of UTIs in women. Check with your health care provider about other types of birth control.
